Way Too Early Schedule Preview 2024

Way Too Early Schedule Preview 2024     BGSU released the schedule in a pretty cool ChatGPT slideshow. I am always the first fan to prepare everyone for the REALISTIC expectations for BG football. However, seeing the official schedule actually has me thinking a shot at the MAC title SHOULD be on every fan's mind going into 2024...     The Falcons have the non-conference games before any of the 8 MAC games which I really love. Last year we had our toughest MAC games schedule around and in between Michigan and Georgia Tech which did us zero favors. The Falcons start with a bad FCS school in Fordham, Penn State, then Texas AM. 99.999999% of the time the Falcons are going to be 1-2 to start the year. Old Dominion is interesting, they are a solid Sun Belt team and I think that is a real 50/50 game for the Falcons but given the current returning players and continuity I see the Falcons winning to start 2-2.      The first four MAC games are Akron, who BG has dominated for most of my life

UMass is joining the MAC in 2025

UMass is joining the MAC in 2025 (photo via BG Athletics)     UMass was a football only member of the MAC from 2012-2015 when they first joined FBS football.   However, since they would not move their other sports out of the Atlantic 10, the MAC kicked them and they have football independent since. UMass went 1-7, 1-7, 3-5, and 2-6 in conference play during their 4 seasons. From 2019 to 2022 UMass was an astonishing 3-37.      Do I like this move for the MAC? Short answer, no. UMass adds zero credibility in football. Some would argue that adding more teams is what everyone else is doing so shouldn't we do the same? Again, no. The MAC has a nice niche of MACtion in November. As of right now, all this move does is split whatever ESPN will pay the MAC into 13 shares instead of 12. Trust me, UMass football does not mean the MAC has moved into the Boston market. UMass is 2 hours away from Boston and literally no one cares about UMass football in the city. Now what this move does possibl

2023 Season Recap

BGSU Secures First Winning Record Since 2015!!!!      I am going to say something that should be obvious, 2023 was an awesome year for BG football (again). Let me throw out some numbers that should drive this home, some of which include 2022. Coach Loeffler said back in 2018 that he needed 3 years of a complete rebuild before success was going to come and he has proved it now back to back years.   24%   the combined MAC win percentage of the MAC teams BG has beaten from 2016-2021. In 2022, BG's MAC wins (Akron, Miami OH, CMU, WMU, Toledo) had a conference win percentage of  43% !!!  17 number of years BGSU went without a win over a P5 team that went bowling. Coach Loeffler beat 8 win Minnesota in 2021 and 7 win Georgia Tech this season. BG's last BCS win over a team that went bowling was in 2003 against Northwestern.  11-34  was Bowling Green's MAC record from 2016-2021. In the past two years BG has gone  10-6  in MAC play. 24% to 63% win record in conference play 8 t

The MAC says Goodbye to Divisions, Hello to Pods

The MAC says Goodbye to Divisions, Hello to Pods     Okay, I am coming around to the pod formatting. My first thought was hey, this is super dumb. Why are we changing the format that between 2015-2021 never had a single team win the MAC Championship twice? The unmatched parity is the best thing about the MAC. Let's take a look at the pros and cons. Pros: 1. The MAC Championship is elevated. I am hoping this does not come at the cost of the beloved parity in the league, but the Championship game will be better. There have been years, most recently in 2022 where even though Toledo won, they were the 4th best team overall in the standings behind Ohio, Buffalo, and BGSU. So in theory if there is a year where instead of a 10-2 and 7-5 team facing off, there could be the 10-2 team and a 9-3 team who's only MAC lost was to the 10 win team in their division.  2. Teams will play more often. The current structure has seen BG play a team like Ball State or Eastern Michigan just twice in a

Transfer Portal 2024

Image
Transfer Portal 2024     The transfer portal in my opinion is fun, good for players, and actually helps a school like Bowling Green.      The portal also has so many opportunities for different players. You have studs from the G5 move up to the SEC, P5 backups dropping down to start at G5 schools. You have FCS starters jumping up to FBS, also FCS backups who would rather be a backup at a FBS school. Many casual fans do not realize how valuable depth guys are and scout team players truly make big differences in practice. Even G5 guys would rather be a backup at an SEC school. So in my mind, the portal is a plus value.      This list may not be 100% accurate but is updated to the best of my knowledge. I am going to give my opinions on each player, not meaning any disrespect but just an honest assessment of each player's impact in my opinion. Best of luck to all the guys leaving, and a big welcome to all the new Falcons joining! Incoming Transfers Breakdown: Total: 18 Position RB: 1
