Top 5 Defensive Players to Watch in 2022
1. Karl Brooks
Brooks is a veteran on this defense, a guy that has been here since the Mike Jinks era. Brooks is in his final season of eligibility and will need to anchor this strong defense in the trenches. Brooks led the line in tackles last year, as well as racking up 6.5 sacks. A returning captain, Brooks will not only need to be a problem for opposing offenses, but really lead this defense especially when the offense may be struggling.
2. Davon FergusonFerguson was injured and missed some time last year but when he was on the field he was a dawg. A hard hitter and an older player who knows how to grit and grind. Ferguson has made it clear that after a few years at Kansas, making a bowl game is his ultimate goal. 2022 is his last chance and I am expecting big time things this year.
Anders led the falcons in tackles with 124. An insane amount of tackles, Anders is another homegrown talent who has been on the squad since 2019. Anders is strong, tough, and a straight up menace to opposing runners. If this team is going to succeed in 2022, a big part of it will be the stacked linebacking core led by Anders that includes Bryce Brand, Brock Horne, DJ Taylor, and more.
Anderson is a guy who I thought would transfer out of Bowling Green along with Caleb Biggers and Jerry Roberts last offseason. He decided to stay, a loyal and servant leader of this defense. Anderson has been a consistent starter since 2019 and was given an A ranking by PFF as well as making their true freshman All-American team. Besides making a game ending interception against Minnesota, Anderson week in and week out was a consistent player and will need to take another step forward in 2022.
5. Walter Haire
I have to put my guy Walter Haire on this list. The longest tenured member of this team, Haire has been on the squad since 2017. Haire racked up 38 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2021. Walter started multiple games in 2020 and 2019 and as one of the leaders of this team will need another big year. I say it all the time, but games in the MAC are won in the trenches, so Brooks and Haire will need to be a dynamic duo and pressure the QB often.
