2022 Season Recap

    2022 Was a Smashing Success as BGSU Goes Bowling!!!!

    I am going to say something that should be obvious, 2022 was an awesome year for BG football. Let me throw out some numbers that should drive this home. 

  • 24% the combined MAC win percentage of the MAC teams BG has beaten from 2016-2021. In 2022, BG's MAC wins (Akron, Miami OH, CMU, WMU, Toledo) had a conference win percentage of 43%!!! 
  • 14 the number of years since BG has beaten Toledo in the Glass Bowl
  • 7 the number of years since BG's last bowl game
  • 6 the number of years since BG's last 3 game win streak 
  • 3.5 the win total set by Vegas for the Falcons. The 2nd straight year Coach Loeffler and the boys outplayed expectations 
  • 3 the most MAC wins in a season from 2016-2021, BG had 5 in 2022
  • 3 the increase in MAC wins from just last year 
  • 2 the number of wins against the MAC West BGSU has had from 2016-2021. BG got 3 just in 2022
  • 1 the number of teams BG has beaten from 2016-2021 that went bowling. BG beat 3 bowl teams this year


    Looking at the numbers above, they blow my mind. Again, having an increase in quality of conference teams beaten is crazy. The combined conference record of the MAC schools that BG has beaten from 2016-2021 is 21-67 (24%) but in this season, it is 17-23 (43%). That is a drastic increase in quality conference wins. What further drives that home is the fact that the Falcons beat 3 bowl teams just this year, while they had beaten just 1 (Minnesota) in the previous 6 seasons. For the 2nd straight year BG has outplayed the expectations set by very smart people in Las Vegas. Probably the craziest stat of the year is BG's record of 3-0 against the MAC West. From 2016-2021 BG was a HORRIFIC 2-14 (13%). What an insane year, getting more MAC West wins in this year than the previous 6 seasons. Also the MAC East record was 2-3 this year which is a 40% win percentage, which is still a great record. From 2016-2021 BG's MAC East win percentage was just 31%. Also not to be forgotten, BG's MAC record just last year was 2-6, shooting up drastically to 5-3. Really just an incredible year, to the outside 6-6 is not crazy but compared to where this program has been, freakin incredible.

    The rebuild laid out by Coach Loeffler in 2019 was as such: 
  • be bad in year 1. We were, going just 3-9 but ending the decade long drought of beating Toledo by pulling off a massive upset
  • be really bad in year 2. Yep, 0-5 and not even close to winning a game
  • be better in year 3, but inconsistent, can beat anyone and lose to anyone. Exactly right, went 4-8 and beat Minnesota but get slapped by Akron. That is the definition of inconsistency 
  • be competitive. Went exactly as planned again. Yes some bad losses but tied for 2nd in the MAC East, beating multiple bowl teams, going 6-6 and bowling for the first time in forever. That is competitive to me.  
  • be championship competitive. TBD 
    Coach Loeffler delivered this year in a successful 6-6 campaign. All the numbers I laid out above help paint how truly great this year was for BG. It was not always pretty, there were blowout losses and a FCS heartbreaker but my golly this year was awesome. The Marshall win in overtime on homecoming, finally beating Toledo on the road, getting Coach Loeffler's first win over Miami OH. Finally having a winning MAC record and going bowling. 

    Finally, the responses to adversity were just surreal. Lose to an FCS school? Respond with a homecoming win against a Marshall team that just spanked Notre Dame. Blowout loss to Buffalo? Respond with a 3 game win streak. Blowout loss to Kent State? Respond by beating Toledo on the road for the first time in 14 years, just the 2nd time in 13 years. Especially sweet considering how good Toledo was this year, winning the MAC Championship. This team was special, and Coach Loeffler delivered when it mattered the most. Now BG has a Quick Lane bowl game against New Mexico State to hopefully cap off the season with a win. Regardless of the bowl result, this season should be placed in the BGSU Hall of Fame due to where this program has been since the fall from grace. I will break down other parts of the year including stats in another blog.  Ay Ziggy

Eddie George To Retain 4 Coaches     4 BG Coaches Reported to be Retained     According to Football Scoop, Eddie George is retaining Greg Nosal, Derrick Jackson, Brian White, and Alex Bayer from Coach Loeffler's staff.      Alex Bayer in my opinion was a must keep for the new staff. A former player who won the 2013 MAC Championship with BG and had a cup of coffee in the NFL, he was coaching special teams and tight ends. The special teams was fantastic over the past 4 years under Loeffler and this staff and Harold Fannin just had BG's first All-American season under Bayer and so this move made all the sense in the world. Derrick Jackson coached this secondary that had the most takeaways in all of FBS, Greg Nosal has done a great job with the O line and co coordinating the offense. Transfer Portal 2025

                                  Transfer Portal 2025     The transfer portal in my opinion is fun, good for players, and actually helps a school like Bowling Green.      The portal also has so many opportunities for different players. You have studs from the G5 move up to the SEC, P5 backups dropping down to start at G5 schools. You have FCS starters jumping up to FBS, also FCS backups who would rather be a backup at a FBS school. Many casual fans do not realize how valuable depth guys are and scout team players truly make big differences in practice. Even G5 guys would rather be a backup at an SEC school. So in my mind, the portal is a plus value.      This list may not be 100% accurate but is updated to the best of my knowledge. Coach Loeffler Leaves Bowling Green Personal Thoughts      I am so thankful for Coach Loeffler. On a personal note, he was always super kind to me, a lowly alumni trying to cover my team with my tiny little blog. When Coach Loeffler started following me on twitter and retweeting some of my tweets he gave me a lot of credit to other coaches, players, and media types. After my next training with the Army and Ranger school I will finally set up my own website and my growth is due in part to Coach Loeffler's kindness to me and his interview.
