BG Football Names 5 Captains

BG Football Names 5 Captains

Just a few days away from kickoff, BG Coach Scot Loeffler announced the 5 captains for 2023. This is a massive year for BGSU football and these 5 will need to provide the leadership through a rough schedule. They replace some great captains from 2022 in Matt McDonald, Karl Brooks, and Walter Haire.

Darren Anders LB Senior

Anders is literally a day one Scot Loeffler guy. Getting solid playing time since his freshman year in 2019, Anders led the MAC in tackles in 2021 and was an anchor in the 2022 defense. Anders did test out the portal in the off season but came back home to BGSU. It is crazy seeing this guy help lead the culture shift from the disaster BGSU was to a bowl team, look for Anders to finish off his BG career with a bunch more tackles.

OJ Hilaire WR Senior

OJ transferred in from Alabama AM in 2022 and was an absolute beast for the Falcons. Over 200 yards and 2 touchdowns against Toledo, 2 touchdowns against Marshall, OJ proved he can excel at the FBS level after an amazing career at Alabama AM. Just one year as a Falcon and OJ instantly became a leader and his play on the field showed why.

Davon Ferguson DB Senior

Going into 2021, Coach Loeffler kept signaling Ferguson as a guy who came in from the portal to a winless team and was instantly changing the culture. Davon was dominating 2021 before a season ending injury, same with 2022 just two games in. After transferring to Georgia Southern for the spring, Ferg is back with a vengeance. This dude was instrumental in the 2021 Minnesota upset and can be a game changer in MAC play this year when trying to get us to Detroit.

Anthony Hawkins DL Senior

Hawkins has HUGE shoes to fill after NFL Draft pick Karl Brooks and fellow captain Walter Haire graduate. Hawkins has seen a lot of playing time since 2021 but will now need to be the bell cow of the D line. Anthony was great at plugging gaps last year and had some critical sacks late in some of the MAC wins in 2022. Part of Loeffler's first full recruiting class in 2020, Hawkins has seen the worst of BG and is trying to lead this defense to the best of BGSU football.

Levi Gazarek TE Junior

Levi caught just 3 passes in 2022 but was a really solid blocking TE. Being a captain is about more than stats, it is about work ethic, leadership, culture. I am not in the weight room but I am assuming Gazarek is pushing guys everyday and could really step into a bigger role in 2023's offense. Levi did have a couple Big10 offers out of high school but chose BGSU because he could play baseball as well.
