MAC Gambling Corner Week 8



    It's back!!! The return of the Gambling Corner. I have been having a fantastic season on my personal bets and figured it is time to bring back the Corner for the people. I will make one pick on every MAC game and see how that goes. 

1. Western Michigan vs Ohio -16.5 O/U 52.5

    I think Western has surprised me with how good they have been but I say that because I thought they could go 1-11 and they will likely go 4-8. Ohio dropped a stinker last week but every MAC team does that every year. I think the cats rebound with a convincing win this week. 

Best Bet: Ohio -17

2. Akron vs Bowling Green -8 O/U 37.5

    Everyone wants to talk about how close Akron has been in their losses. Guess what, they are still losses. Under Coach Moorehead this team always finds a way to lose. On the other hand BG has rarely shown an ability to cover as a favorite, especially one close to double digits. BG is 1-4 ATS under Coach Loffler and only have ONE FBS win by more than 16 points since 2019. Despite that, give me the Falcons on family weekend with the retro helmets. 

Best Bet: Bowling Green -8

3. Eastern Michigan vs NIU -12 O/U 44

    Eastern has been a tad disappointing this year. NIU has looked much better the last couple weeks but this is the same team that lost their FCS game the week after beating Boston College. I still have faith in the Eagles, so I'll bet on them to at least not get blown away. 

Best Bet: Eastern Michigan +12

4. Buffalo vs Kent State +7 O/U 43

    Buffalo had a horrible non-con going 0-4. However, they are 2-1 in MAC play. Kent may be one of the worst teams in the country. I think Buffalo wins but my best bet is on the total. I think Buffalo's offense rebounds after last week and Kent is able to score as well. 

Best Bet: Over 44

5. Central Michigan vs Ball State +5 O/U 40.5 

    CMU got a big win against EMU, then got rocked by Buffalo. The Chips then got a close win against Akron so I do not know what to think of this team. On the other hand, I think Ball State is pretty bad. Like, 3 wins bad. Give me the Chips on the road. 

Best Bet: CMU -5

6. Toledo vs Miami OH +2 O/U 46 

    This is obviously the match of the week. Maybe the season. Toledo has done nothing but win, even though they have not looked good doing so. Miami seems legit this year on both sides of the ball. I think Toledo's run of winning close games comes to an end. Miami's smallest MAC win was by 13, give me the Hawks. 

Best Bet: Miami OH +2

  Transfer Portal 2024     The transfer portal in my opinion is fun, good for players, and actually helps a school like Bowling Green.      The portal also has so many opportunities for different players. You have studs from the G5 move up to the SEC, P5 backups dropping down to start at G5 schools. You have FCS starters jumping up to FBS, also FCS backups who would rather be a backup at a FBS school. Many casual fans do not realize how valuable depth guys are and scout team players truly make big differences in practice. Even G5 guys would rather be a backup at an SEC school. So in my mind, the portal is a plus value.      This list may not be 100% accurate but is updated to the best of my knowledge. I am going to give my opinions on each player, not meaning any disrespect but just an honest assessment of each player's impact in my opinion. State of the Program 12/4/23

Bowling Green Clinches First Winning Record Since 2015!! (photo via BG Athletics)     Scot Loeffler said it weeks ago, this team has a chance to do something special. I would say beating a Power 5 team on the road, going 5-3 in the MAC and blowing some teams out qualifies as special. Think back to just a few years ago. Mike Jinks' BG team was going 2-10, players getting arrested, zero culture, zero love for the school and the traditions. Now Coach Loeffler in another seemingly do or die season has showed up, showed out, and needs a contract extension ASAP. Now that I am no longer traveling, let's cover a few recent football topics.  1. 4 Game Winning Streak     For the first time since 2015, Bowling Green football won 4 games in a row. Buffalo beat us last year, Akron has had our number recently under Tom Arth, Ball State is still coached by MAC Champions Mike Nue and had 22 seniors, and Kent was 5-0 in their last 5 against us. State of the Program 10/16/23

State of the Program 10/16/23 (photo via BG Athletics) Vibes?     The vibes should be good across BG nation. The win on the road at Buffalo was HUGE. I said it in my recap blog (will publish tonight), this outcome makes perfect sense. BG is going to be  inconsistent, meaning that after getting blown out 27-0 they will win this much needed road contest. Going into the year, I really thought this team could have been 1-6 with only an FCS win. I thought more likely was 2-5. I really did not give 3-4 much of a thought, so despite the 2 blowout MAC losses, I am quite impressed with the current state of the program. Getting a P5 win is always a legacy win. Even a 4-8 or 3-9 season I would not look at as an absolute nuclear failure for any MAC team if you sprinkle in a P5 win. BG got a bunch of national attention especially after GTech beat undefeated Miami on the road the next week.
