Coach Loeffler Leaves Bowling Green

Personal Thoughts

I am so thankful for Coach Loeffler. On a personal note, he was always super kind to me, a lowly alumni trying to cover my team with my tiny little blog. When Coach Loeffler started following me on twitter and retweeting some of my tweets he gave me a lot of credit to other coaches, players, and media types. After my next training with the Army and Ranger school I will finally set up my own website and my growth is due in part to Coach Loeffler's kindness to me and his interview. Scot was super dedicated to the kids, the coaches, and put his 100% effort into rebuilding this football program for all of BG nation.

Football Thoughts

This stinks for BG Football. BG has gotten better every year and is now firmly a top tier school in the MAC. We beat bad teams and battle the good teams. Coach Loeffler also just posted our school's best conference record since 2015 and had Texas AM and Penn State on the ropes. This year brought BG some major publicity especially with Harold Fannin's record breaking year as the best TE receiving year in college football history.

The year was 2018. Mike Jinks was just fired after driving BGSU into the nuclear wasteland gutter of college football. After three years of losing to mid FBS teams by 50 and going 3-16 in Jinks' final 19 games, the Falcons needed a coach to right the ship. In comes Scot Loeffler. A move panned by many college football media outlets, I could instantly tell after I met coach on campus he had the passion and the morale character to steady this ship. He outlined an old school rebuild program that would see things get worse before they got better. 2019 was a 3-9 start but of course he ended the decade long drought by upsetting Toledo at home in a monumental win with guys like Quintin Morris and Grant Loy. Then 2020 was a universal disaster but needed in the start of the rebuild. Then 2021 sees improvement and the craziest win in Bowling Green history in a 14-10 slopfest win AT Minnesota. Then after we lost to EKU in 2022 I thought the rebuild might not work and then of course Coach Loeffler and the Falcons led by Karl Brooks and Matt McDonald upset Marshall the next week (they just beat Notre Dame) and 2022 saw BG finally make a bowl after ANOTHER Toledo upset in the craziest rivalry game ever. 2023 and 2024 saw us settle into a consistent bowl team that included a win over Georgia Tech and the bashing of Toledo last year. We went from a bottom 10 team in the nation to 3 straight bowl games and an All-American TE who captured national spotlight.

Congrats Coach Loeffler

The money is probably similar (if not better) as the QB coach in Philly. They could win another Super Bowl here soon and there is probably 50% less work. With the transfer portal, NIL, this sport is literally unrecognizable to what it was in 2018 when Coach Loeffler took this job. Plus now UMass is in the MAC and their spending is worrying me as they are dwarfing what BGSU is spending on football. Plus I am unsure on Coach's contract status and with the constant firing of coaches who have one down year I am happy to see him off to the NFL where he will get to work with Jalen Hurts and win a bunch of games.

What is next?

I personally do not think anyone on the current staff should be elevated just for continuity. We do not need another Mike Jinks situation where a coach who is not read to run a show gets hired. I may be a little old school in my thinking but I would love a current FCS head coach from the midwest or a rising coordinator from a winning program. When Kent State hired a running backs coach from Minnesota I knew instantly they would be a disaster. I want a former or current head coach. Someone who can work the [portal the way Coach Loeffler has been, someone old school who knows winning happens in the trenches. If I was Derek Van De Mere I would call Dino Babers right away and see if he wants to come back. His offense is a guaranteed winner in the MAC and he would have a really athletic QB to work with. Feel free to tweet or DM me who you think should be brought in for an interview!

Ay Ziggy! Go Falcons!

    1. Right?! I would love to welcome Dino back and he is old enough to probably not leave again

    2. Babers contract at Arizona (OC/QB) was not renewed so he's on the market.
