Looking back at BG's last 3 game win streak

BG with first 3 game win streak since 2016 

    The 2022 BG Falcons have the first 3 game win streak since 2016. That is a tough thing to hear, emphasizing how dreadful the on field product has been since Bowling Green's mini dynasty from 2013-2015. I decided to take a look back at how long it has truly been. I was a freshman in college and was so excited to embrace this team, excited to be a fan of a team coming off of a MAC Championship. The hire of Mike Jinks started off dreadfully 1-8, finishing the year with 3 straight MAC wins. BG beat Akron 38-28 on the road, then 2 straight home wins against Kent State 42-7 and Buffalo 27-19.

    It has been just under 6 years since BG's last 3 game win streak. 6 YEARS!!! 

  • Mike Jinks had just gotten his 3rd FBS win, would only end his tenure with 5
  • Redshirt Freshman James Morgan was the starting QB for all 3 games. Morgan would transfer to FIU after 2017, eventually spending a few years in the NFL, drafted to the Jets in the 4th round of the 20202 NFL draft. 
  • Jinks finally realized how dumb his air raid offense was, as BG gashed Buffalo for over 350 yards on the ground. Fred Coppet, Josh Cleveland, and Donovan all rushing for over 100 yards. Funny enough the week before against Kent State, the SAME THING. All 3 running backs went over 100 yards. I doubt that has ever happened in BG football history, and yet happened in back to back games on this win streak. In the Akron game, 2 running backs went over 100 yards as BG used the run game to dominate their opponents. 
  • To again further highlight Jinks' inept coaching, BG averaged 131 yards per game rushing through the 1-8 start, then averaged 340 yards rushing per game during the win streak. Jinks just refused to make his game plan around the strength of the team, instead forcing them to conform to his scheme. 
  • "Closer" by the Chainsmokers and "Black Beatles" by RAE SREMMURD were the number 1 songs at the time of the winning streak. 
  • "Moana" was the number 1 movie at the box office
  • Fred Coppet ran for over 1,000 yards, the last Falcon to do so. 
  • Scott Miller was just a sophomore, catching 74 balls for 968 yards and 10 scores. Miller would go on to be drafted in the 6th round of the 2019 NFL Draft, eventually winning a Super Bowl with the Bucs. Scotty had a clutch 39 yard touchdown grab from Tom Brady to take the lead in the NFC Championship game that year. 
  • BG's 4-8 record would be the best for the Falcons until 2021 when the Orange and Brown went 4-8 as well. 

    The long wait for sustained winning has just made it that much sweeter. I am so proud of this team for responding to adversity with impressive wins and hopefully this win streak keeps going! The keys to the current win streak has been great defense, efficient QB by Matt McDonald, and Harold Fannin has a rushing touchdown in all 3 games. Going into the next 3 games, the air attack may need to really heat up. Ay Ziggy

    You definitely explained the history well, but the question, " did the present Syracuse head coach, Dino Babers, have leave any recruits for Jinks to work with on the offensive and defensive lines?"

      No, but thats a problem in the following years, in 2016 there was a fantastic O line that if allowed to run more, BG goes bowling

  Transfer Portal 2024     The transfer portal in my opinion is fun, good for players, and actually helps a school like Bowling Green.      The portal also has so many opportunities for different players. You have studs from the G5 move up to the SEC, P5 backups dropping down to start at G5 schools. You have FCS starters jumping up to FBS, also FCS backups who would rather be a backup at a FBS school. Many casual fans do not realize how valuable depth guys are and scout team players truly make big differences in practice. Even G5 guys would rather be a backup at an SEC school. So in my mind, the portal is a plus value.      This list may not be 100% accurate but is updated to the best of my knowledge. I am going to give my opinions on each player, not meaning any disrespect but just an honest assessment of each player's impact in my opinion. Bowling Green Clinches First Winning Record Since 2015!! (photo via BG Athletics)     Scot Loeffler said it weeks ago, this team has a chance to do something special. I would say beating a Power 5 team on the road, going 5-3 in the MAC and blowing some teams out qualifies as special. Think back to just a few years ago. Mike Jinks' BG team was going 2-10, players getting arrested, zero culture, zero love for the school and the traditions. Now Coach Loeffler in another seemingly do or die season has showed up, showed out, and needs a contract extension ASAP. Now that I am no longer traveling, let's cover a few recent football topics.  1. 4 Game Winning Streak     For the first time since 2015, Bowling Green football won 4 games in a row. Buffalo beat us last year, Akron has had our number recently under Tom Arth, Ball State is still coached by MAC Champions Mike Nue and had 22 seniors, and Kent was 5-0 in their last 5 against us. State of the Program 10/16/23

State of the Program 10/16/23 (photo via BG Athletics) Vibes?     The vibes should be good across BG nation. The win on the road at Buffalo was HUGE. I said it in my recap blog (will publish tonight), this outcome makes perfect sense. BG is going to be  inconsistent, meaning that after getting blown out 27-0 they will win this much needed road contest. Going into the year, I really thought this team could have been 1-6 with only an FCS win. I thought more likely was 2-5. I really did not give 3-4 much of a thought, so despite the 2 blowout MAC losses, I am quite impressed with the current state of the program. Getting a P5 win is always a legacy win. Even a 4-8 or 3-9 season I would not look at as an absolute nuclear failure for any MAC team if you sprinkle in a P5 win. BG got a bunch of national attention especially after GTech beat undefeated Miami on the road the next week.
