Coach Loeffler Contract Situation
Coach Loeffler Contract Situation
I recently read a well written article on the BG Media site about whether or not Coach Loeffler should be given a contract extension. https://bgfalconmedia.com/147506/sports/should-bgsu-give-scot-loeffler-a-contract-extension/
While I do think it is well written, I think it is flawed. Mainly being the recruiting rankings brought up. I am going to say something that many fans will disagree with but here we go... RECRUITING RANKINGS DO NOT MATTER IN THE MAC. Again, this is ONLY in the MAC. In the SEC, it matters. In the MAC, every school has similar money, resources, and talent pool. The difference is a recruit rated an 83 vs an 80 is basically nothing. The article brought up that BG is 11th in the MAC right now. However, 247 team rankings show that BG has 14 commits, Eastern Michigan has 22, so of course BG will be behind. It does not account for transfers which BG brings in a lot of.
Need some proof? Ohio just won the MAC East, yet in the past 5 recruiting cycles was only not in the bottom 4 teams ONCE. The reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year was a 2 star recruit (Kurtis Rourke). In fact BG's 2 best offensive players in the past decade in Matt Johnson and Scotty Miller were 2 star recruits and they will both be BGSU Hall of Famers in short order. Ryan Hunter was an All-MAC lineman, 3 year starter, and has a Super Bowl and a Grey Cup Championship and was just a 2 star recruit. Trust me, in the MAC every team recruits VERY similar players and it comes down to DEVELOPING those players. Speaking of development, Coach Loeffler developed a regular ole 3 star recruit with just one FBS offer into BG's next NFL Draft pick in Karl Brooks. Pretty good if you ask me.
Should Coach Loeffler be extended?
My final verdict is.... yes. Coach Loeffler should be given an extension ASAP. It is difficult to recruit kids when the Coach in their living room will not even be under contract when they get to campus and more importantly, Coach Loeffler has delivered on every promise he has ever made this school. He said we will be bad, worse, better then bowling. We did EXCACTLY that, and threw in a Minnesota upset and 2 wins against Toledo to boot. Now I do think that the extension should only be for one year, so we can evaluate 2023 which is a pivotal year. In my opinion, similar to the BG Media article written by Tyler Kavalecz, is that 6-6 should be the minimum standard. Is it unfair to put his entire job onto making a bowl next season? Yes. Life is not always fair though, Coach Loffler had to give his first 3 seasons just to stabilizing the nuclear wasteland that was Bowling Green football which is burden that was unjustly placed on Scot's shoulders. We fielded a dam FCS roster his first 2 years and now we are requiring back to back bowl seasons to not be fired? That is just how G5 football life goes. You either leave after your stock rises or you stay long enough to get run out by an administration hoping to spark change. See Urban Meyer and Gregg Brandon for the case studies. Sometimes you go from Brandon to Dave Clawson and its like winning the lottery, other times you go from Bo Pelini to Scott Frost. Either way, 2023 needs to be a success.
