Bowling Green vs Miami OH Recap
Bowling Green Shutout in Embarrassing Loss to Miami OH
Takeaways
Honestly, if you expected anything else from this team than that may be your fault. Every program defining win since 2019 has been followed by disaster (outside of the awesome Marshall win).
- 27 point underdogs upset rival Toledo in 2019 for the first rivalry win in a decade is followed up by losses to Central Michigan and Western Michigan 38-20 and 49-10 respectively.
- 31 point underdog Falcons stun Big10 Minnesota on the road in 2021, followed by a close loss to NIU then a 35-20 embarrassing loss to Akron, blowing a 17-0 lead.
- A historic 42-35 win over Toledo is sandwiched in between losses of 40-6 and 38-14 to Kent State and Ohio in 2022.
- The homecoming upset of a Marshall team that had just beat Notre Dame was followed by an SEC loss which was fine, then a MAC win against Akron. The Marshall win while not followed by immediate disaster was preluded by a 7 OT loss to a FCS school in the 2022 season.
Keeping with that trend, Bowling Green scores another historic P5 win on the road at Georgia Tech after trailing 14-0. Of course that game was preluded by a 38-7 loss to Ohio. Then followed up by a 27-0 loss to Miami OH.
The offense looked bad, the defense could not get off the field. Less than 200 yards of offense. I am as mad as anyone about the terrible officiating because it really does seem to always go against BG but you cannot point to officiating when you lose by 4 scores and get shut out.
Moving Forward
The goal for this season remains the same, get to a bowl game. I have said countless times, the creation of the transfer portal and NIL have changed the trajectory of the rebuild. That being said it is still year 5 of the tenure of a group of 5 coach. Going anything less than 5-7 probably means a coaching change. I think in this new era of football, going 7-5 then 3-9 then 6-6 is going to become common amount the G5 conferences. I am a fan of patience but then again Coach Loeffler only has so much goodwill built up with the new AD. BG needs to go 4-2 to finish out the season and the schedule is VERY workable. Buffalo, Akron, Kent State, Western Michigan, and Ball State all will likely not go bowling so BG needs to beat 4 of those 5. Or beat Toledo again.
The amount of blowout MAC losses are really piling up. Coach Loeffler is 2-2 against Toledo and has 2 P5 wins, both insanely good stats for a BGSU football Coach. However, this marks this staff's 19th MAC loss by 3 or more scores. BG since 2019 only has 3 MAC losses by less than 3 possessions. That is shockingly bad and I know this program was a dumpster fire on top of a nuclear wasteland when Loeffler took the reigns but at some point that excuse does not hold up when the losses by that score have persisted in years 3,4, and 5. Combine that to what I was saying in my State of the Program blog, the opposing QBs just seem to have such an easy time playing us, our QBs are always fitting balls into tight windows. Brett Gabbert and Kurtis Rourke were a combined 29/34 passing. That is ABSURD and things have to change fast if this team wants to string together 6 wins.
Shocking statistics no doubt, but that bogus roughing the passer call that cost BG an interception completely changed the course of the game. Officials have too much say over the outcome of these games and are hurting the enjoyment of the sport with their omnipresence.
